Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet: Two Blue Note Albums Worth Hearing

Kenny Cox was a bop pianist who created 2 pretty good late 60's albums for Blue Note.

Introducing Kenny Cox, and Multi-direction are both very nice advanced post bop albums.

You can get both sessions on one CD that was issued in the year 2000.

Both albums feature Kenny Cox on piano, Charles Moore on trumpet, Leon Henderson on tenor, Roy Brooks on bass, and Danny Spencer on drums.

All 5 of these musicians probably weren't known for anything more than these 2 albums, though all of these musicians were well known inside of Detroit Michigan.

If you are a fan of the second Davis quintet, I think this Kenny Cox lead band will be to your liking.  "Introducing" is the better album in my opinion, but both should be considered sister album.

Overall I like the music quite a bit, the drummer Danny Spencer stands out the most to me, he seems to be the most advanced of all of these musicians.

This particular copy of Introducing Kenny Cox will set you back about 20 dollars, Multi-direction the same, both are worth having in my opinion.

I did come away thinking these were sort of minor league sessions, listen to Miles Davis' ESP or something, and you can definitely tell a difference.

The 2 copies I have, have the dreaded"clipped corners", why did the retail stores do that? I know they did it to signify that it was excess inventory, but the clipped corner as opposed to the "punch hole" sure is ugly by comparison.
