Got a Good Thing Goin' is no exception, no saxes to get in the way this time, just drummer Hugh Walker and the congas of Richard Landrum too add a little more color.
The dual between Green and Patton is spectacular, reaching juicy soul jazz heights. Nothing of real complexity happens on Got a Good Thing Goin', but the music sure stirs you up.
The 3 Patton originals, "The Yodel", a fantastic groovin number that will get your feet a movin. "Soul Woman", and Duke Pearson's "Amanda," are basic blues numbers, but plenty of grits and gravy. The last two tracks are standards,"Aint that Peculiar" and "The Shake", with the latter adding plenty of more groove, if you needed more.
All in all, soul jazz just doesn't get any better than this. Never one time did I wish for a Lou Donaldson style Sax solo either. The track "The Yodel" is worth the price of the disc alone.
I listened to it as a first press Blue Note LP from 1966, the sound just explodes from the speakers. The sound stage is in your face, and the Low ends rattle the walls. Grant Green rings true and crisp in the mix too.
