Tyrone Washington's Natural Essence: The One and Only Record He Did For the Label

Tyrone Washington is a real mystery of late 60's jazz, the tenor saxophonist performed on Horace Silver's The Jody Grind and Larry Young's Contrasts.

1968's Natural Essence was the first album Tyrone recorded as a leader and the only session for Blue Note.

Tyrone Washington rarely ever recorded again. He did a jazz funk album in the 70's called Do Right, but other than that not much was recorded. You really can't find too much information about what became of Tyrone.

Natural Essence is a one the best pure jazz albums released on Blue Note after the Liberty buyout of the company. It has an inside outside approach, fans of advanced post bop will have much to enjoy here, but not too far into free jazz territory. I think it's one of best Blue Notes of the 60's period, which adds to the mystery as to why this was a one shot deal for Washington?

I have discovered on the Amazon.com review page for Natural Essence, an explanation from a reviewer, who claims to be Tyrone Washington's Brother, he offers a brief explanation to what happened to Tyrone, the review seems legit to me, you can find that here.

Natural Essence also features some real fine young players at the time who went on to jazz stardom, including Woody Shaw on trumpet and Kenny Barron on piano,  Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on Drums, overall just a fine slice of post bop. It should be in every modern jazz collection.

A CD copy of Natural Essence will set you back some coin, maybe as much as 100 dollars! Original vinyl copies can be had in the $25-$35 range, with vinyl reissues under 20 bucks.

Natural Essence is one of those albums that slips through the cracks, but those in the know, haven't missed out, and if you like great advanced post bop modern jazz,  you know.
