Johnny Coles' Blue Note 4144: Little Johnny C.

Johnny Coles' Little Johhny C. is one of those fantastic one off Blue Note albums. Coles' only session as a leader for the label.

Actually when you get down to it, this was probably in the top 2 or 3 of Duke Pearson's albums.

Duke is Credited for writing all but one track on Little Johnny C. "Joe Henderson brought in his composition "Hobo Joe".

For me what make the music so great is the up beat bouncy nature, I feel this same vibe on other Blue Note albums like Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin'.

I feel Little Johnny C. is a Blue Note Classic, and should easily be in the top 10 or 20 of any Blue Note Vinyl collection.

One thing about Coles, he doesn't really sound like anybody I can think of off hand. he sort of has a brittle tone, but not brittle in a nails on chalk board way, he's unique, his own man.

Johnny was probably best known for his association with Charles Mingus, he played on Town Hall Concert with Eric Dolphy, which is a classic. He also played with Gil Evans during the 1958-1964 period, being a part of another classic album, the orchestral Out of the Cool with Evans.

This pictured copy is a 1970 pressing, and is rising fast in price, probably will run you 50 dollars easy for a VG+ or better copy. An original pressing, be prepared: How's $200.00 sound? I have seen sell much higher than that.

You can get current reissues right now for under $15, and mid 70's Liberty Pressings for in the 25 dollar range. The Title track pretty much gives you a great idea how the record sounds. Don't miss it.
